Here in America, July 4 is celebrated as "Independence Day", when the new country liberated itself from oppressive British rule. The beer landscape has changed since Harpoon first introduced its IPA in 1992. Back then, India pale ales were rare, and a beer that was 5.9 percent alcohol by volume , was not usual.

I just finished with the tour and headed out to the brewpub which I reviewed too. This was a good tour. Our guide (I think Luke or something) was very knowlegdeable and friendly. the tour was an "extra" tour they made to accomodate people being late due to 4th of July traffic - very nice that they did that as I was one of the late ones too. Again the guide was very knowlegdeable but also enthusiastic. Seeming some of the original equipment was a bonus. I read Sam's book and so it was cool to see some of the stuff, though I would've love to have seen the "vibrating football field/continual hopper". read more »

Just finished a tour at the Brewery so I thought I had to visit the birth place of Dogfish. The place was bustling and instead of waiting for a table I chose to sit at the bar. Nice looking place and afterward realized sitting outside would have been a great choice too. I ordered a sampler, couldn't get it until I said the term they use - fish something or other. As expected, I enjoyed the beer.
I ordered a turkey burger with mushrooms on a kaiser and soup - mushroom and potatoe. The soup was ok but luke warm. The burger was good but the mushrooms didn't seem delighted to be there. The fries had the taste of the frozen ones I had as a youth - not a fond memory. Overall the food was less than stellar. read more »

A Finger Lakes winery is now venturing into beer territory. The Three Brothers Winery in Geneva has set up an offshoot - the Barley Yard Brewing Company - and they are making beer from grapes.
I just got word that a beer-can collecting friend - Dee - died last night of a heart attack. In our local beer can collecting club, we have three geologists, a meterologist, sales people, and various other professions. We even had a NASCAR driver, Rich Bickle, for a while. In our larger region, there are doctors and lawyers in our group as well as truck drivers and farmers. Most of us have at least one college degree, which was something that I suspect Dee didn't have.

Buckbean Brewing Co. , if nothing else, has perfect timing in entering my life! The evening prior to the day that I finally procured visitation rights with my young daughter, I also received a box of beer from said brewery. In cans no less! They say that the cans are not only for quality control purposes but also environmental reasons. I'll leave the explaining up to them and the beer reviewing up to me.
