LETS GO.DRINKING IN WASHINGTON DC (THE BRICKSKELLER)

I just returned from a couple of nights in the worlds most confusing city, Washington DC, a place in which driving is a total gumball rally of missing signs, traffic circles, ill-timed lights and confusing streets (NW, NE, SW, SE), and which totally puts Boston of San Francisco to shame for sheer & utter vehicular bafflement. What relevance does this have to this beer blog?  read more »

845-846. New York: Burp Castle

After the driving range we went to McSorley's, because Win was interested in seeing the oldest continuously operating bar in The City. We had a couple rounds and an order of cheese and crackers to tide us over since we had an early brunch.

After leaving McSorley's, we went to Burp Castle. We snacked on the free fries there, and played three person hearts on the porch. I narrowly edged Win out for the win 42-43, and David lagged with 69 points. We had a few rounds here, before heading to our next stop.

A New Brewpub in Ely

I received a nice note from Andy Sakrison regarding his new project, BoatHouse Brewhouse & Restaurant, a new startup brewpub in Ely, Minnesota. Andy used to work in the brewery at Fitger’s Brewhouse in Duluth. I had heard a bit about the project from some other folks involved about a year ago, so it’s cool [...]

He’Brew Jewbilation Eleven

HeBrew Jewbelation ElevenShmaltz just keeps upping the ante with each iteration of their anniversary ale. With this, the eleventh year version, they showed up with 11 types of malt, 11 types of hops, and 11% abv - that’s a lot of 11’s, and it could make for a confusing brew. However, these guys usually don’t put out a lackluster product, so I’ve got high hopes. This beer pours an exceptionally dark brown - nearly black. You can only see the hints of the brown around the edges of the beer when held up to light. There is very little head here - what exists is in the form of thin caramel islands that float along the surface of the beer.  read more »
