"Adam's IPA is terrific," said Samuel Adams Brewer and Founder Jim Koch. "It's not easy to brew an IPA that has a lot of flavor and maintains its balance, but Adam got it just right." New England Patriots' ticket holders won't have to take Jim's word for it. With Adam's help, Samuel Adams will brew his Patriot Homebrew IPA at its Boston Brewery to be served at the Samuel Adams Brewhouse in Gillette Stadium during the entire 2008-2009 football season.
Imports are a big part of the U.S. beer business -- and theyre going to get bigger. As recently as 2004, full-calorie mainstream domestic beers commanded more share in supermarkets than imports. Thats not the case now. Imports in 2007 represented more than 14 percent of supermarket beer sales, according to beer sales statistics from Nielsen. Mainstream full-cal domestics, meanwhile, accounted for just over 11 percent. That stat highlights how imports are an increasingly important part of the U.S. beer business. And that trend is only going to continue. The latest issue of Brew took an in-depth look at how imports have transformed -- and will continue to transform -- the U.S. beer business. From the issue:How big is imported beer? read more »

These are the second set of 10 new beers that I had at the Belgian Beer Fest. A good portion of them seem to be rare or one-off beers given that they're not in the BA database. I think this is a sign of a good beer fest, that brewers are willing to bring their small batch, one-off beers to a fest, or better yet, to brew them for a fest. It helps keep the variety high and the offerings interesting. 881. The Tap Honing Ale Beer Stats: Brewery: The Tap / Haverhill Brewery, Inc Alcohol: 6.80% Style: Belgian Pale Ale , BJCP Style Guide Pours a cloudy, straw golden. Topped by a sudsy head. Honey is definitely present in the aroma with a bit of a resiny character. The sweetness of the honey mingles well with a nice tart fruitiness from the yeast. read more »

Will craft brewers raise prices? The Wall Street Journal on Friday took a look at the implications of higher-priced hops and barley for craft beers. From the story: "Consumers could pay 50 cents to $1 per six pack more in the coming months for many small-batch "craft beers," as brewers pass on rising hops and barley costs from an unpalatable brew of poor harvests, the weak dollar and farmers' shift to more profitable crops. Other makers of craft beers, the fastest-growing segment of the U.S. br read more »
Brent and Jamie came up to Boston for Labor Day weekend. On Saturday we took the Orange Line out to Jamaica Plain to go on the Sam Adams Brewery Tour, something I'd somehow managed not to do in my four years in Boston. We got to the brewery and had to wait about an hour for an open tour, but in the meantime there were some exhibits to peruse and a couple beers to sample for the Beer Lover's Choice Vote. They've brewed two beers, an Irish Style Red Ale and a Dunkelweizen. I ended up voting for th read more »
