I just thought I would pass this along. It's the latest email from the president of the "Free the Hops" organization in Alabama, Stuart Carter. (concerning our ongoing fight to change the archaic "6% ABV limit on beer" laws here) I hope anyone living in, or planning on visiting Alabama, would support this boycott. Free the Hops members and supporters, We are not far from the beginning of the 2008 legislative session! We are pushing even harder this year to ensure our bill will get passed, and have been speaking with those responsible for preventing success last year. Unfortunately, the leadership at Birmingham Budweiser is still working against the interests of both Anheuser Busch (who, in addition to Bud, brew dozens of beers that are currently illegal under Alabama law) and Alabama consumers. They have indicated that they will again work to prevent our bill, freeing the hops, from passing in the Alabama state legislature. It is with great sadness that I have to proceed on the basis of requesting all FtH members and supporters in the Jefferson County area to join in a formal boycott of Birmingham Budweiser products. I have sent the attached press release to various journalists, so you can expect to see this in the newspapers soon. If you have any news contacts, please pass this email with the two attachments on to them. I have included a list of products supplied by Birmingham Budweiser for ease of reference. If you are approached for a comment, I would ask you to model any responses on the content of the press release or to refer any requests for comment to me. Please also let me know who you spoke to and their contact details. If you hear from any retailers or other businesses who would like to join in, please ask them to contact me but also emphasise to them that this is a targeted action against the behaviours of the leadership of *Birmingham* Budweiser. You've likely seen them on the shelves at your local retailer or on tap at the corner pub ... six packs of brightly colored bottles depicting a snowman in sunglasses and green stocking cap holding a pint of ale or maybe a purple-capped, pumpkin-headed scarecrow figure standing atop a brightly enameled tap handle. These are not the marketing creations of the newest small-batch craft brewer on the scene though your palate may try to convince you otherwise. read more »
InBev’s takeover offer of Anheuser-Busch has been accepted. After all the “Hell No, Bud Won’t Go” slogans, politicians deriding the selling of yet another American “icon” to a foreign company, and those pathetic commercials with August Anheuser Busch IV blathering on about the company, InBev raised their initial offer of $65 per share to [...]

Anheuser-Busch has decided to reformulate its Tilt and Bud Extra brands, pulling the current products from the shelves, after coming under pressure from 11 states Attorneys General.
The states had claimed the caffeinated alcoholic beverages were being marketed towards underage drinkers and that the company was making misleading statements about the energizing effects of the brands. read more »
Warren Buffet, the investor known as the sage of Omaha, is this week expected to privately step into the $46bn hostile bid by Belgian brewer Inbev for Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Budweiser beer.

I happened to glance at the beer aisle at Ingle's today and noticed a beer that I haven't heard of. It is called Wild Blue Blueberry Lager, brewed by the Blue Dawg Brewing Company. This was not a brewery I had heard of before, but its location next to the Stone Mill Pale Ale clued me in on its actual origin. It is brewed by Anheuser Busch.
This isn't the first time one of the big three brewers has deceptively invented a brewery name for marketing purposes. Perhaps the biggest example of this is the very successful Blue Moon Belgian White, brewed by the Blue Moon Brewing Company, aka Coors. Coors also produces Killian's Irish Red, a bastardized version of a recipe for an Irish Red Ale that was changed to a lager for sale in the United States. Anheuser Busch has recently used the phantom brewery trick to cash in the increase in organic products by releasing the previously mentioned Stone Mill Pale Ale and Wild Hop Lager from 'Green Valley Brewing'. read more »
