2007 A Good Year for Beer

Industry up estimated 1.4 percent, says Beer Marketers Insights.Beer Marketers Insights Jan. 14 issue has a roundup of 2007 beer statistics. And it was, in BMIs words, another pretty good year for beer.Beer shipments increased by 1.4 percent, a solid encore to the 2-plus percent increase in 2006, BMI reported.Given that spirits growth slipped to the 2 percent to 2.5 percent range, the growth gap between beer and spirits narrowed considerably.Here are some highlights of BMIs report:1. Shipments for the three leading domestic brewers increased by 5 million barrels, or more than a full share point. This was due to a combination of new brands and improved trends. Turnaround for Corona?

Down in supers during latest period. Modelo, Tecate up.Corona Extra has seen sales slide since a price increase last year. Could a turnaround be on the horizon?Robert Sands, CEO of Constellation Brands (part owner of Corona importer Crown Imports), said that he's seeing encouraging trends. Beer Business Daily quotes from Sands' presentation at a Goldman Sachs event:Anecdotally, although we don't have any of the retail data at this point, Cinco de Mayo looks like it was a great holiday for us. Brew Blog's picks of news from the beer business and beyond.Corona shows greatest signs of cannibalization from the Bud Light Lime launch, Morgan Stanley analyst Bill Pecoriello writes today in his weekly beer report. Over the 2 weeks that covered the Cinco de Mayo holiday (and the 1st 2 weeks of the BLL launch), Crown volumes declined 10% with Corona trademark volumes down 11%. Average price per volume was down roughly 0.5% over the same time. Share for Crown was off 50bps over the last 2 weeks. Recall that Credit Suisse previously has written, apropos of Bud Light Lime, that "We are hard pressed to conjure a more confrontational challenge for Corona."Beer remains the beverage of choice for Millennials, reports Nielsen Consumer Insight.  read more »

Smaller Imports Driving Growth

Corona, Heineken families are flat. Threebeers_2 After a long stretch of flat or declining performance in supermarkets, imports are showing signs of growth again. No thanks, however, to the two megabrands -- Corona Extra and Heineken -- that have driven the groups growth for years. Import sales in supermarkets increased by 0.2 points during the four weeks ended April 19, according to beer sales statistics from Nielsen. That translates to a 30,000 case increase over the year-earlier period. During the four-week period, the Heineken franchise (Heineken and Heineken Premium Light) was up 1,000 cases, according to Nielsens beer market analysis. The Corona family was down 12,000 cases. Is Land Shark Biting Corona?

Hot brand in supers.While its been overshadowed by the success of Bud Light Lime, Anheuser-Buschs Land Shark Lager has taken a bite of market share in supermarkets, according to Nielsen.Land Shark Lager -- a brand A-B launched in partnership with singer Jimmy Buffett -- had 0.2 case share and 0.3 dollar share during the second quarter, according to Nielsens beer market analysis.Could Land Sharks success be a factor (along with a variety of other brands) in stymieing the rebound of Corona Extra?  read more »
