The Return of The Belgian Beer Fest

I apologize for the tardiness of this post. Over a month and a half late, I'm beginning to feel like Ward. Jadyn and I went to the afternoon session of Beer Advocate's Belgian Beer Fest on the 27th of October. We arrived early enough to be within a half-block of the doors. This year's fest seemed less crowded than last year's. The middle row of booths was removed and replaced with seating. Overall I think this was an improvement, there's still more than enough variety and it's far less crowded. As with other fests the notes are more general, abbreviated and are probably to be trusted less as the fest progresses. 715. 763-774. The Extreme Beer Fest, Part I

On Saturday the 16th of February David, Win, Jadyn and I went to the afternoon session of the Extreme Beer Fest. The setup was pretty similar to the last fest I went to at the Cyclorama. There was a nice selection of beers. Three Floyd's had a booth, as well as Surly. As usual the notes are abbreviated and more general. This beer fest will be split into two posts. 763-765. Harpoon Parti-Gyle Harpoon brewed a series of three beers for the beer fest. The beers were all brewed from the same mash. A Stock Ale was brewed from the first runnings, a Pub Ale was brewed from the second runnings, and a Table Beer was brewed from the third runnings. We started with the weakest beer of the three and worked our way up.  read more »

899-907. Salem Harvest Fest

David came up to Boston the weekend of October 18th. As usual, we had a weekend of drinking scheduled. David arrived at around 10 PM on Friday night, had a bite to eat at our place, and then we went to the oddly named pub, "Joe Sent Me", for a few beers. David had found a small Beer/Mead/Wine fest in Salem on Saturday, called the Salem Harvest Fest . We had a particularly nauseating ferry ride to Salem, but managed to walk most of it off before having lunch at Upper Crust. The Fest itself was small. Initially it was very crowded and a bit hard to move around, but people ended up leaving relatively early and it got much better. There was pizza from Upper Crust, and some cheese and crackers for snacking. There were beer booths from Magic Hat, Harpoon, Mercury Brewing, and Fisherman's. I managed to try all of the beers that I hadn't had yet (only 9). I was particularly impressed with what Fisherman's was offering, and I'll have to try them again. There were also several booths serving wine and a booth serving mead. There were three very nice Danish meads , one made with ginger, one made with hibiscus, and one made with caraway. We also had a bit of wine towards the end of the fest. We also witnessed an heroic effort to get sloshed by an overweight, middle-aged, white guy. We would stand next to a booth, get a sample and quickly sip it, all the while manufacturing his best attempt at a contemplative face. After he finished the sample he would simply hold his glass out waiting for a refill. He would repeat this until he was denied service at the booth, and would move on to the next. Rather than taking the ferry back to Boston in our inebriated states, we opted to take the much smoother commuter rail back into Boston.  read more »

871-880. The Return of the Belgian Beer Fest: Part 1

Jadyn and I went to the afternoon session of Beer Advocate's Return of the Belgian Beer Fest on Saturday September 27th. This is always my favorite BA fest... I can't get enough Belgian beer. I do regret no going to the Friday night special session though. The format seems to be pretty constant now: unlimited 2 ounce samples, food from Sunset, Belgian sugar waffles, talks, and booths from a good variety of breweries and importers.

I was pleased to see New Belgium at this fest. They haven't been at any of the other Beer Advocate fests that I've been to, and I managed to get a couple samples of the phenomenal La Folie.  read more »

Harpoon’s latest creation

Cider GlassI was recently invited to another Harpoon Brewery unveiling. This unveiling was neither for a special release, like Harpoon’s 100 barrel series Glacier Harvest Wet Hop Ale , nor for a beer. It was for a new, year round, cider. Now this is not a cider blog, and I am not a cider drinker (my last cider, a Strongbow , was had a few years back while I was studying in London), but IR  read more »

673. Harpoon Peche (100 Barrel Series #19)

673. Harpoon Peche (100 Barrel Series #19) I purchased a bomber of this at Downtown Wine & Spirits. I had it the other night at home in one of my Duvel tulip glasses. This is listed as a fruit lambic on Beer Advocate, but it didn't seem like a lambic to me, so I'm listing it as a Fruit Beer. Beer Stats: Brewery: Harpoon Brewery Alcohol: ? Serving: Bottle, 22 oz. Style: Fruit Beer , BJCP Style Guide Appearance (4.0): Pours a cloudy golden with a thick, white head that leaves sheets of lace.  read more »
