Wild Goose Brewery

The Flying Dog brewery moved their production facility from Denver to Frederick, and now the Wild Goose Brewery in Frederick actually apparently brews over 70% of the Flying Dog varieties and some of the Wild Goose.
This is definitely one of the best brewery tours I've been on. A very friendly and humorous guide takes groups on a tour through the entire facility and encourages sampling all of the different Flying Dog and Wild Goose varieties at the bar. The bar is one of the most impressive parts of the tour. Tours begin at 1:30 every Saturday at the bar area where almost every single variety of Flying Dog and a few Wild Goose beers are available on tap for your sampling pleasure. They even have a test batch of beer to gauge people's interest. The servers are quite friendly and very knowledgeable about the beer they are dispensing. Its located in a relatively small city too so the atmosphere has a small town feel to it. Outdoor seating is available so you can taste the samples on the patio while waiting for the next tour.  read more »

Day 21: Another 119 Entries and More Fabulous Prizes

To say that the response to the 2008 Yule and Christmas Beer Blog Photo Contest and Pageant... I did mention the pantomime pageant, did I?... has been far greater than expected would be the understatement of the year. We just created another photo set on Flickr for entries submitted between 28 November and half of the entries on 2 December and that adds another 119 photos to the 118 on the first Flickr photo set. 237 pictures to 2 December and we still have four days of entries to catch up. That is crazy...but not if you consider the fabulous prizes that are being pledged by these great sponsors:  read more »

Oskar Blues to Make Wash for Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey

When Flying Dog Brewery moved its production east one of the questions was where would Stranahan's Colorado Whiskey get its wash? The micro-distillery was located next door to Flying Dog, making it easy to pipe over the "beer" that would be distilled to make an impressive whiskey.

Enter another Colorado microbrewery: Oskar Blues Brewery. Oskar Blues will provide about 100 barrels of wash (3100 gallons) each week. Stranahan's, which has been in business since 2003, will distill that liquid down to about 300 gallons of spirit that will then be aged.  read more »

Flying Dog looks to be going with a couple of Belgian styles for their next couple of outings. (Okay, the Bière de Garde is more of a French style, but still.) Should be interesting to watch the progress as they shift all their brewing to Maryland.
