763-774. The Extreme Beer Fest, Part I

On Saturday the 16th of February David, Win, Jadyn and I went to the afternoon session of the Extreme Beer Fest. The setup was pretty similar to the last fest I went to at the Cyclorama. There was a nice selection of beers. Three Floyd's had a booth, as well as Surly. As usual the notes are abbreviated and more general. This beer fest will be split into two posts. 763-765. Harpoon Parti-Gyle Harpoon brewed a series of three beers for the beer fest. The beers were all brewed from the same mash. A Stock Ale was brewed from the first runnings, a Pub Ale was brewed from the second runnings, and a Table Beer was brewed from the third runnings. We started with the weakest beer of the three and worked our way up.  read more »

Florida Beer Company brews a number of different bottled beers and does contract brewing for others. They don't have tours that I know of (maybe on certain days?).

Their beers tend toward the light end of the spectrum (as it is Florida), although they do have a very good porter.

You can try all of their beers (a few on tap, all of the rest from bottles) as long as they are not out of a certain kind.

You can buy bottles by the 6-, 12-, or 24-pack. I think it was $5.99 for most 6-packs and $21.99 for most cases. They had a few on special because of printing issues, etc for $9-12 per 24-pack. (I may have bought some of those.) You can also mix & match a 6-pack for the same price.  read more »

BJ's Restaurant Brewhouse

Welcome to my little tour of two of the franchise locations of BJs Brewhouse Restaurant. I searched this place out quite a bit on the internet looking for brewpubs in the Ontario, CA area since I was heading out there on business. BJs is a public company with locations throughout California and a few other Southwestern states, including two locations in Florida and one in Columbus, Ohio. This franchise is located, like most BJs, in or around a mall parking lot with easy accessibility and parking. As I walked in at about 4:30, the place was half-full.  read more »

Fratello's and Fox River Brewing

Overall I was really pleased with this place. Oshkosh is a different kind of Wisconsin town. Very much so a collage town but with the feel of a Florida coastal community mixed with a Door County look.

Fratello's was pretty busy the night we stopped in, it was prom night and we didn't have reservations. We ended up ording a round of root beers, cream soda and a Scotch Ale for me...very tasty! This smoky and nutty beer warmed me and was a good starter brew. We had to hang around the bar area for 10 minutes or so before a round taller table with bar stools opened up. This worked for us (my wife the 2 kids and I) and we proceeded to look over the menus. We went with a nice appetizer of breads and dips and ordered fish and chips, pasta, quesadillas, sweat potatoes with marshmallows and more for dinner.  read more »

Budweiser Reboots Michelob

From the Jacksonville Business Journal: Michelob Brewing Co., a subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch, said Monday that it would kick off an advertising campaign, offer some seasonal varieties year-round, and bring some other A-B beers under the Michelob nameplate and give them all consistent, new packaging. The campaign includes national print, television, radio and online advertisements, as well as an updated Web site.  read more »

847-849. New York: The Belgian Room

After leaving Burp Castle, we went to The Belgian Room for more beer. I had my first real lambic here, a Cantillon Lou Pepe Kriek, back in 2006. So I was looking forward to another trip.

847. Lectio Divina

We started by sharing a 750 mL (I believe) of a Belgian Strong Pale Ale from a brewery in Florida that I'd never heard of.

Seeking suggestions for Florida brews

I am down in Florida with family for a few days, trying to avoid alligators and sip good beer. Here in Naples the weather is gorgeous, but the traffic can be fierce. Mostly I have been sitting in the sunshine,...Rob Kasper
